As I write this, I am en route to Indianapolis for the 2025 Biennial Convention of Sigma Theta Tau International. Such a journey gives me time to reflect on the remarkable opportunities that the nursing profession has afforded me.

When I began my career, I never imagined it would lead to international travel, collaborations with inspiring nurse leaders from around the world and the chance to work with and motivate fellow nurses globally. Being the first in my family to attend university – although my two older sisters are hospital-trained nurses – such possibilities seemed far beyond my reach. Yet, these are the stories seldom told when people speak negatively about nursing.

‘Connecting with others can reignite your passion for nursing and inspire you to pursue new possibilities’

Stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging with the international nursing community has been transformative. The benefits extend far beyond the individual; they enrich our profession as a whole.

Nursing networks open doors to collaborative research, joint writing projects and enduring friendships

Sharing ideas and forging connections with nurses from different countries broadens our perspectives and reminds us that there is no single way to solve a problem. These networks open doors to collaborative research, joint writing projects and enduring friendships across continents. Most importantly, connecting with others can reignite your passion for nursing and inspire you to pursue new possibilities.

If you feel that international engagement is a distant prospect, I encourage you to take the first step. Join an international nursing organisation or reach out to a nurse overseas who works in your area of interest. As you plan for the new year, consider how you might explore the opportunities that the nursing profession has to offer.

For those who already have international connections, think about how you can strengthen or expand them in the coming months. By building a vibrant global nursing community, we not only inspire and support each other but also enhance our collective impact on the health of communities everywhere.
