Female external catheter trial cuts bed days and dermatitis cases

A nurse-led trial at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) that gave eligible patients the option of a female external catheter (FEC) rather than incontinence pads or an internal catheter saved bed days and thousands of pounds across two wards, and resulted in a huge drop in incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) cases. The device is particularly useful for patients with obesity or neurogenic bladder, or who have experienced a stroke, the trust's incontinence service lead says, and the trial has led to changes in continence care at the trust.
